Oisin Mod Enlists Bill Ryder-Jones for New Single ‘Premium’ Ahead of Second Album ‘Canary’

Galway-born singer-songwriter Oisin Mod has unveiled his new single “Premium,” offering the latest preview of his second studio album, Canary, set for release on 6th November. The track features guest guitar work from former Coral guitarist and producer Bill Ryder-Jones, who also produced the forthcoming record.

Following previous singles “Mirror Mirror” and “Canary,” “Premium” finds Mod expanding the delicate, analogue melancholia of his 2022 debut, Honeycomb, into darker, nocturnal territory. Written while isolated in a rundown West Cork house, the material channels influences ranging from David Lynch films to Nick Cave associate Rowland S. Howard.

Elaborating on the psychological themes driving the songwriting process, Mod explained:

“Jagged thought processes were a big part of where these songs came from. Being disillusioned and feeling like a cynic and maybe becoming not so easy to be around yourself. That’s the sort of world that a lot of it came from.”

“Consuming that sort of stuff definitely informed the record. I knew the feeling that I wanted but didn’t know how to articulate it. I had to start engaging with stuff that was in that world.”

Recorded in just 12 days alongside drummer Phil Murphy (The Fernweh, Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band), the album marks the second collaboration between Mod and Ryder-Jones following their 10-day session for Honeycomb.

Reflecting on their studio relationship, Mod and Ryder-Jones shared:

“Recording with Bill just works. We have a shared vernacular and there’s an understanding of our work dynamic.” — Oisin Mod

“I’ve got a lot of love for Oisin. Making one album with someone is fine, but if you don’t get on then the chances of making a second one are quite thin. Secondly, I’m a fan of his writing. He has a way with words that is very unique to him, and that counts for so much. Those two things are all I’m really interested in, in truth. It’s actually really easy to work with Oisin. He has a clear picture of what he wants, and my only real job is to facilitate that.” — Bill Ryder-Jones

“I really like records that sound organised, not to the point of being rigid, but if we found something that sounded good, we thought, Let’s just fucking stick with it… Music can still sound big without adding a load of stuff on to it.” — Oisin Mod

“Premium” is available to stream globally across all digital platforms now, with Canary arriving on 6th November.
