Decibel’s Canadian readership are likely more familiar with the names Bloodshoteye and Robert Pickton than our newfound adversaries south of the border. Which name you’re more familiar with will likely depend on where your interests lie. Though given the Venn Diagram between metal and serial killers, there’s a decent chance both are, or have been, on red-and-white radars at one point or another.
Formed in the rural wilds of Leamington, Ontario — proximal to Point Pelee, Canada’s southernmost point — a-way, way back in 2001, Bloodshoteye were “pioneers in the female-fronted death metal movement.” They released three albums on Galy Records and CDN back in the day and toured extensively with the likes of Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Despised Icon and Unearth before throwing in the towel in 2011. On the flip side of today’s post is Robert Pickton. The man also known as the Pig Farmer Killer was one of Canada’s most notorious serial killers, having lured upwards of 26 women from the gritty streets of downtown East Vancouver to his farm in Port Coquitlam where he murdered them and fed their bodies to the pigs on his property.
As Bloodshoteye celebrate their 25th anniversary, and the nation celebrates the second anniversary of Pickton being murdered in prison by a fellow inmate, the band is here to tie up one last loose end of unfinished business. That being a video/horror short for the track “The Slaughterhouse Romance” which originally appeared as the closer of the their Expect the Unexpected album from 2010. Says guitarist and HI Multimedia’s Shane Ivy: “The song ‘The Slaughterhouse Romance’ is based on one of the ugliest Canadian stories of our lifetime: Robert Pickton and what happened on that farm in British Columbia. When we wrote it for Expect the Unexpected in 2010, I already had this horror-style video in my head — the pig farm, the killer, and the victims. Fifteen years later, Rickey (my partner at HI Multimedia) and I finally had the means to shoot it the way I always envisioned it. Bloodshoteye started in 2001 in Leamington, Ontario, as kids who wanted to be the heaviest thing coming out of the southern tip of Canada. Jessica [Desjardins]’s unique voice, all the records, videos, tours — but that chapter closed in 2011. This isn’t Bloodshoteye coming back. It’s us celebrating 25 years and finishing the last idea we left unfinished. Having Decibel premiere it means the song & story lands where it belongs: in front of people who love metal and horror stories.”
