Tom Petty Estate Shares ‘Fooled Again’ Video

Tom Petty Origins

The Tom Petty Estate has released a video for the extended, newly mixed version of “Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It).” Directed by Alan Bibby, who also helmed the “Wildflowers” video, it draws on the band’s 1978 performance on the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test. The video premiered on what would have been Petty’s 76th birthday.

The performance marked the band’s international breakthrough. Bob Harris, the BBC host who contributed an essay to the box set’s Blu-ray booklet, recalled it as “one of the greatest performances we had ever seen by a band at the top of their game.” The full 41-minute set will be included in Origins 1971-1978, presented in HD for the first time with restored audio.

“Fooled Again” first appeared on the band’s 1976 debut, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Ryan Ulyate, the band’s longtime producer and engineer, has remixed and remastered that album for its 50th anniversary. The collection also includes new mixes of every track on the band’s 1978 follow-up, You’re Gonna Get It! “American Girl” and “Breakdown” are among the other extended tracks across the two albums.
