From a formidable past to an unexpectedly playful personality, Kim Gang-rok is a character who keeps viewers guessing in Netflix’s Our Sticky Love. Portrayed by actor Jeong Soon-won, Gang-rok is one of Jang Tae-ha’s (Jung Hae-in) most trusted allies, a man whose complicated history and unwavering connection to Tae-ha add another layer of intrigue to the series. Balancing moments of tension with humor and warmth, Gang-rok brings an unpredictable energy to the story while revealing the depth of a bond forged through hardship.
Since its release, Our Sticky Love has captured the attention of audiences worldwide, reaching No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English TV chart and entering the Top 10 in 68 countries. The series’ international success highlights the growing global appeal of Korean storytelling, with its memorable characters and emotional connections resonating with viewers across borders. For Jeong Soon-won, the role of Gang-rok offers another opportunity to showcase his versatility, bringing nuance and individuality to a character who can shift from lighthearted charm to fierce determination in an instant.
In this exclusive interview with KpopWise, Jeong Soon-won discusses his approach to portraying Kim Gang-rok, the dynamics that shaped his character’s relationship with Tae-ha, and the memorable moments that made filming Our Sticky Love a meaningful experience. He also reflects on his growth as an actor, the unexpected impact of the series’ international reception, and his hopes for the kinds of characters he will bring to life in the future.
Kim Gang-rok has a complicated history with Jang Tae-ha and remains one of his most trusted allies. How did you approach understanding Gang-rok's loyalty and his relationship with Tae-ha?
Jeong Soon Won: Gang-rok and Tae-ha started out in similarly rough circumstances. They went through so much danger together, protecting each other, relying on each other, that I figured they'd grown closer than family.
So when Tae-ha disappeared, Gang-rok's loss must have hit hard, hard enough that he'd risk anything to track him down in Taffy Village. That's the Gang-rok I wanted to play, fiercely loyal, the kind of guy Tae-ha could always count on.
Was there anything about Kim Gang-rok that surprised you once you began preparing for the role?
Jeong Soon Won: The director walked me through Gang-rok's twist before we even started filming, so nothing really caught me off guard. Rough past with Tae-ha aside, what makes him click is how bright and cheerful he is now.
He's the kind of character who can ramp up the tension one minute and lighten the whole room the next.
Kim Gang-rok is a character who can communicate a lot without necessarily saying much. How did you use body language, facial expressions, or silence to show what he was feeling?
Jeong Soon Won: I never played him as suspicious on purpose. I just tried to be Gang-rok, genuinely happy to see Tae-ha again, and let the camera angles and lighting do the work of making him look shady. That's what built the tension.
I kept thinking, if you're already on edge in some dark, creepy alley and someone comes running at you grinning ear to ear, that's somehow scarier. I held onto that while acting.
He's usually playful, but the second things get serious, he snaps into something sharper, almost like flipping a switch into combat mode. That contrast is what sells him as Tae-ha's reliable right hand.

Was there a specific scene that was particularly challenging for you as an actor, and what made it difficult? On the other hand, was there one you found especially satisfying or memorable to film?
Jeong Soon Won: The final action scenes come to mind first, the gym director, Tae-ha, and Gang-rok against a whole crowd of enemies.
The stunt director handled the riskier, harder moves with the stunt team, but Jung Hae-in, Jeon Bae-soo, and I still had plenty to do ourselves. We practiced constantly and were sore for days, but once we saw how it all looked on screen, we were really satisfied with it.
Was there a moment when something Jung Hae-in did during a scene unexpectedly changed the way you approached your own performance?
Jeong Soon Won: There's the scene where Gang-rok gets kidnapped. Locked in a cage, basically at death's door, and then Tae-ha comes barreling in to save him, fighting everyone off, watching that, I just got emotional out of nowhere and teared up.
I'd originally planned to just play him as completely wiped out, but seeing Tae-ha come for him, the gratitude hit me for real, and the tears came with it. I just rolled with that feeling.
He didn't want to show it, though, so he covered with a joke. That's where the line “Why'd you come? I told you I’m good at fighting” came from.
What's one behind-the-scenes memory from filming Our Sticky Love that you hope you never forget?
Jeong Soon Won: The final wedding scene sticks with me, the one where we do the wedding song. The Taffy Village S.E.S. cast practiced like crazy for it, and I put a lot of work into my rap part too.
I was so nervous, but the second we wrapped it, all I could think was, We actually pulled it off! Then we all got soaked in the rain together, and honestly, as an adult you don't get many chances to just run around having fun in the rain like that. I think that's why it stuck with everyone.

Jeong Soon Won: I've gotten more relaxed about how I approach a project or a character, and I think my perspective's just broadened, in how I read a story, how I play a role.
I used to act like a racehorse with blinders on, just charging straight ahead. Now I think a lot more about blending naturally into a scene and finding harmony with everyone else in it.
Going forward, I just want to exist naturally as whatever character I'm playing, and eventually bring my own color to every role.
Jeong Soon Won: Honestly, I wonder that myself. It's still kind of surprising that a character I helped shape can be understood and loved by audiences halfway around the world.
I never went in thinking, I'm going to make Gang-rok loved everywhere, so I genuinely can't tell you why it clicked the way it did. But I'm really grateful and happy that so many people connected with him.
I also think it's thanks to the K-dramas before us, they built this momentum that let international audiences dig deeper into Korean stories and characters. So, thank you, truly, once again.
If you could give Kim Gang-rok one piece of advice, what would it be?
Jeong Soon Won: You've got good people around you, do your best by them, and love without keeping score.
To the wonderful Gang-rok,
From Soon-won.
Looking Ahead: For audiences discovering you through Our Sticky Love, what do you hope people remember about the kinds of characters you chose to bring to life?
Jeong Soon Won: The more I work, the more I want to be an actor who draws out empathy, I want people to just naturally get what my characters want, what they're feeling.
If my performances can bring people some joy, entertain them, maybe even comfort them sometimes, that would genuinely make me happy. Going forward, I just want to keep playing characters who feel like people you'd actually run into in everyday life, and do it honestly.
