My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way reveals plans to make new album in 2027 and return to touring in 2028

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has revealed that the band want to record a new album in 2027, and hinted that they hope to return to the stage in 2028.

Way made the comments during the band’s ‘Devil’s Night’ concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles last night (October 30), the first of two special Halloween weekend performances at the venue.

Addressing the audience about the band’s future plans, he said: “So yeah, next year, we wanna go make a record,” prompting screams and cheers from the crowd.

“Hopefully we’ll see you guys in 2028,” he added, suggesting that the band could take next year away from touring to focus on recording their long-awaited fifth studio album.

The comments follow Way’s remarks at the closing night of the North American leg of their ‘Long Live The Black Parade’ tour in San Antonio last month.

On that occasion, he told fans: “Just know that, like, we’ve kind of really always wanted to make another record, so we hope that life allows us to do that.”

“Because you guys, honestly, you guys kept us alive so long. You guys deserve another record. I don’t know when it’ll be. But it’ll be awesome.”

A new album would be their first since 2010’s ‘Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys’. The group split in 2013 before reuniting in 2019, and have released just one new song since their comeback, ‘The Foundations Of Decay’, in 2022.

During his previous comments in San Antonio, Way reflected on the death of longtime collaborator and producer Doug McKean, who worked on ‘The Foundations Of Decay’ before passing away later that year.

Way explained that the band had been excited about making more music following the song’s release, but that McKean’s death and other circumstances had disrupted their plans.

Elsewhere at Friday’s Hollywood Bowl concert, MCR reunited with The Used frontman Bert McCracken onstage for the first time since 2005.

The two singers were close friends during the early years of their careers, but their relationship deteriorated during the mid-2000s, around the time Way was pursuing sobriety.

During The Used’s opening set, McCracken told the audience that “mom and dad are back together again”, before Way joined him for a performance of ‘Buried Myself Alive’. McCracken subsequently returned during MCR’s headline set for ‘You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison’, from the band’s 2004 album ‘Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’. Watch here:

Friday’s concert also saw My Chemical Romance perform ‘We Don’t Need Another Song About California’ live for the first time. Originally released as an iTunes-exclusive bonus track on ‘Danger Days’ in 2010, the song was made more widely available earlier this year as part of an expanded 15th anniversary edition of the album.

The performance came on the same day that MCR scored their first UK Number One album with ‘The Black Parade’, 20 years after its original release.

The landmark 2006 record, which initially peaked at Number Two in the UK, reached the top spot following the release of an expanded 20th anniversary reissue last Friday (October 23).

The Hollywood Bowl residency has seen MCR become the first group to play five consecutive nights at the historic Los Angeles venue.

Friday’s concert also opened with ‘Prelude To The End’, the band’s new animated short film featuring voice contributions from Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers and more.

The group return to the Hollywood Bowl tonight (October 31) for the final concert of their residency, before continuing their world tour in Asia next month.
