Out of New York, this avant garde queer collaboration between Klovis Gaynor and The Urinal Cakes totally hypnotizes us with an experimental sound on DOM DISDAIN. The song opens with an eerie vocal that makes you want to know more about what is going to occur, and what is going to be sung about. A piano and a trippy hip hop beat take the stage alongside the vocal, while lyrics about toxic masculinity, capitalism, sex work, and the dark psychological impact of power dynamics ring out. There is a brutal honesty in the track that is impossible to ignore. After the confession, the song picks up as the drums get heavier and the bass gets lower, filling out into a grungy and dark power ballad. Our only complaint is that it runs too short, because we want to hear this one develop even longer.
While working on DOM DISDAIN I was thinking a lot about power dynamics within communities, workplaces, families, Christianity, etc. I was reading gnostic gospels and Georges Bataille and diving deep into the histories of pederasty, sex cults and the abuse of power.
I recorded this song with my band, The Urinal Cakes, in Brooklyn this past year. After we finished our last record we began working on our next LP, CUM GUN SINNERS. We approached the production with new ideas, moving beyond the baroque fagpunk sound we had championed on our last project, SAVE ME 4 THE SPANK BANK, towards a new almost trip-hop sound.” – Klovis Gaynor
