You know if I’d closed my eyes I would have sworn that Matthew Smith Group had come from the Flying Nun stable but only after they had recourse to Olivia Tremor Control’s back catalogue. That’s because there is a classic sixties quality to go with all that lo-fi indie guitar action, harmonies and brass operating in a psychedelic stew that felt like home to a pair of my ears. So we get a singer who is high on life, while all around him the spaceships gather with no indication as to whether they are friend or foe. Let’s enjoy the melodic sunshine while we can. KH
