Josi Costi – ‘Joya’

London-based songwriter Josi Costi crafts an immersive sound on his debut album Joya. Its memorable sound fuses acoustic storytelling with vivid, emotive expression. Recorded live to tape over ten days in his sister’s Richmond home, the album shows consistently excellent songwriting. From the luminous “Reverse Simulation” to the tender “Skin,” Costi’s expressive vocals and thoughtful arrangements convey introspection and shared experience.

“Reverse Simulation” opens the album with a gorgeous folk allure, conveying a hope to reconcile past and present amidst imagery of nature and shared experience. “I can see from the other side of the field, where I’ve been, and the flowers that grew,” captivating vocals let out following lush acoustic trickles. The vocals maintain a striking tonal range that remind fondly of Sigur Rós. Glimpses of strings and twinkling piano bolster the production further, kicking off the album in magnetic form.

“The Speed of Stillness” ensues, also enthralling in its meditative entrancement — and here echoing the innocence of childhood, and a willingness in youth to embrace capriciousness. “Sink your hand into the clay / Shape it like a nest / I just wanna play,” ethereal vocals envelop, conjuring a warm and reassuring quality in expressing the simple joy of being together. The highlights continue in abundance from there. “Skin” is a standout, especially — weaving gliding acoustics and serene vocal entrancement, which reflect a push and pull of intimacy and renewal with lines like “See the trees again, finally growing their leaves.”

The album consistently enamors in its lyrical intertwining of nature and human connection, set within harmoniously impactful folk productions.
