The House Flies – “Sweet Foxhound”

A fantastic track from Midwest-based act The House Flies, “Sweet Foxhound” unfolds with dynamic captivation — seamlessly maneuvering from jangly post-punk intrigue into a rock-forward vigor. Following up last year’s album Mannequin Deposit, this single excels with its moody yet inviting sense of momentum. It also introduces guitarist Burnie Eckardt for the first time on record and bridges the band’s past work with a darker, more expansive direction.

“Are you frightened, sweet foxhound?” an understated vocal entrancement begins, as a pulsing bass and steady rhythmic backing craft a nostalgic post-punk pull. Twangy guitars enter thereafter with lushly caressing immersion, assembling with the rhythm section for hypnotic effect. This more subdued beginning then begins to expand with feverish enthrallment. Heightened vocal emotion aligns with a whirring guitar tone. “That’s how I wish you’d remember me,” the vocals let out there, venturing thereafter into textured, bursting guitar distortion and an anthemic tonal disposition. “Sweet Foxhound” is a stirring success from The House Flies, who are currently crafting their next album.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
