A reboot of the 2000s drama series Prison Break is underway at streaming service Hulu, according to a new report.
The original version of the show ran from 2005-2009, and starred Wentworth Miller as a man who gets himself imprisoned in the same location as his brother (Dominic Purcell), as part of an elaborate plan to break him out. The series was a ratings hit and spawned a one-off revival season in 2017.
Rumours of a reboot first emerged in late 2024, and now Variety are reporting that a new series has been greenlit, with a new cast of characters set in the same world as the original. Australian star Emily Browning is in the cast, joined by Drake Rodger (TV’s Landman) and Lukas Gage (The White Lotus).
An airing date and other details of the show are yet to be announced, although the show will be run by Elgin James, who directed Sons Of Anarchy spin-off Mayans M.C., and co-created British comedy The Outlaws with Stephen Merchant.
In 2020, original series star Purcell said that a sixth season was on the way, though this was later shot down by Miller, who said that he wouldn’t be returning for any more seasons of the show: “I’m out. Of PB. Officially. Not bec of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”
The original rumours of a reboot also drew criticism from fans online, with one social media user posting: “Who wants a Prison Break reboot? Who wants a Prison Break reboot without the old characters?”
Another added: “Why is it so hard for studios to try to create something original? Does everything have to be either a reboot or a story “in the same universe” but with new characters? As a big Prison Break stan i hope this flops cause the characters were the main reason people tuned in.”
