Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag was released back in 2013. The hit game takes place during the golden age of piracy, with players following Welsh pirate Edward Kenway as he hunts down the mythical Observatory and deals with both the Assassins and the Templars. The open-world game was praised for its seamless sea travel, naval combat and engaging narrative. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag went on to sell more than 11million copies.

There has been speculation that Ubisoft is working on a remake of the game for a number of years now. In 2024, it was reported that the studio wanted to release 10 Assassin’s Creed games in five years. Last summer, Black Flag voice actor Matt Ryan teased a new version of the game was in the works.

In a new blog post about the future of the franchise, new head of content Jean Guesdon wrote: “Speculation around Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it’s worth repeating: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.’ Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon.” He added a parrot emoji and a screenshot of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, which confirms the rumoured title Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

No further information about the game was revealed but it’s rumoured to release before the end of the next financial year (March 2027) and will introduce improved graphics and new story content to the classic game.

Elsewhere in the blog, Guesdon confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is entering the “final phase of support.” Fans can expect smaller, less frequent updates alongside a “few surprises.”

Codename Hexe (“a darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history”) and Codename Invictus (“a PvP multiplayer Assassin’s Creed experience”) are both in active development. “What matters most to us is giving each project the time it deserves and releasing them when they are ready,” said Guesdon. He also teased more information about the Netflix adaptation is due “soon”.

In other news, free-to-play shooter Highguard will be permanently shutting down on March 12, less than two months after it first launched.
