Jenna Ortega is set to star in a remake of the classic 1990s erotic thriller Single White Female.
The original film was a breakout hit in 1992, starring Bridget Fonda as a young woman who becomes increasingly alarmed by the strange behaviour of her new roommate, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. Directed by Barbet Schroeder, it made stars of its two leads and is considered a cult classic in the world of psychological thrillers.
According to Deadline, new remake of the film is in the works, under the title of Single Female. Sarah DeLappe, who wrote the 2022 horror Bodies Bodies Bodies, is overseeing the screenplay and Ortega is being lined up for one of the two lead roles, alongside Escape Room and Bones And All star Taylor Russell.
Single White Female did have a 2005 direct-to-video sequel, titled Single White Female 2: The Psycho.
Ortega is currently at work on the third season of Netflix’s hit series Wednesday, in which she plays the title role of Wednesday Addams. Winona Ryder has joined the cast for the new season, reprising her collaboration with director Tim Burton, as has Eva Green.
Wednesday season one remains the most watched English language show of all time on Netflix, with over 252million views, while season two is fifth in that list with over 119million views.
NME gave season two of Wednesday a four-star review upon its release, writing that “goth queen Jenna Ortega reclaims her kooky crown” and “the long-awaited follow-up to Tim Burton‘s creepy megahit provides more of the frightsome same.”
Ortega departed the Scream franchise in 2023, shortly after her co-star Melissa Barrera was dropped for social media posts in support of Palestine. Ortega said at the time that she was leaving due to scheduling conflicts, although she later revealed that Barrera’ firing was part of her decision.
Elsewhere, Ortega said in November that the use of AI in filmmaking was something that it was “very easy to be terrified of”.
