Sydney-based artist mkDUBBY captivates on the newly released track “Coming Undone,” combining leftfield electronic dub with experimental spoken word and trip-hop precision. Created at Heritage Studios, the track’s production pairs driving rhythmic appeal alongside meditative poetry, exploring social isolation. This hybrid arrangement utilizes modular systems and analog textures whilst navigating modern structural decay and ensuing lonesomeness, resulting in an inventive, eclectic synergy of sounds.
Pulsing bass, twinkling piano, and introspective spoken-word musings intertwine as the track swells, culminating in the melancholic “just an empty feeling” vocal pull — bolstered by an effervescent synth pad, melding seamlessly with the click-clacking rhythms and murmuring bass. “I stare at apathy’s lullaby,” the vocals continue, complemented there by cinematic strings. The orchestral impact and chopped-up vocal elements enthrall here, beautifully reminiscent of Massive Attack in its trip-hop and electronic cohesion.
Lyrical references to “broken radios” and “fractured signals” artfully capture a difficulty with communication, leading to isolation where salutations only come as glimpses following a long night; its “dub poetry” aesthetic consumes throughout, and especially within this immersive section. Spacious, heartrending strings fade out as the track comes to a wholly satisfying close. “Coming Undone” is a masterful production from mkDUBBY, excelling in both its heady vocal insight and evolving instrumentation.
