Sanford: – ‘Big Tent Revival’

Brooklyn-based artist Sanford: returns with the expansive Big Tent Revival, a self-produced record that picks up exactly where his previous effort, Extinguished Dreams (one of our favorite 2024 albums), left off. Born in South Carolina, Jay Sanford handles nearly every instrument and arrangement, blending insightful modern commentary with an eclectic array of sounds. From stinging critiques of the modern music industry to anthemic takes on country revivalism’s style-over-substance tendencies, the album serves as a multi-genre exploration of artistic integrity in the digital age.

Album opener “Pandora’s Box” plays as a direct continuation of the artist’s previous release — moving from the final guitar notes of Extinguished Dreams closer “Sunrise (Reprise)” into an alarm sound and then the affecting “Pandora’s Box.” Pulsing rhythms and fervent guitars complement an introspection on today’s music industry, where the “rules have changed” within a society intent on commodifying art rather than embracing quality and individuality. The “box is open” hook enamors in its soaring guitar work and “where does that leave you?” questioning contemplation — arising into the “hopeless, fucked and empty” response and ensuing scorching-hot guitar work.

The album consistently immerses with its thematic insight, often digging into the superficiality of modern digital culture while also incorporating personal reflections on fleeting romance, artistic integrity, and the inevitable passage of time. A colorful, eclectic array of styles coexists — spanning from the familiar rock power of the opener, to more avant-garde pieces like “John Boy,” where a jazzy, lounge-set intrigue melds with spoken-word charm. The ensuing “We’ll Leave the Light on for Ya” brings listeners back to the rollicking rock vein, here strutting an anthemic alt-country sound — the “will you mosey on down to your next rodeo?” sequence enthralling with the twangy guitars and backing, wordless vocal enthusiasm; its party-never-ends ethos is contagious and enjoyable.

Another standout track, “Hooked On A Dream” bursts forth with a jangling guitar exuberance. Blaring organs move seamlessly alongside, before moving into a more solemn momentum-building series of verses. Its title-touting chorus, with its heartfelt vocals and guitar twangs, shows enjoyable shades of Teenage Fanclub. From the bluegrass stylings of “Back Home” to psychedelic jam-rock finale “Row Your Boat,” wonderful in its dexterous prog-rock guitars and glimmering synths, the album continues with standout songwriting throughout. Big Tent Revival is another affecting, melodic success from Sanford:.

“We’ll Leave the Light on for Ya” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
