A captivating second single from Glasgow-based four-piece Delta Fire, “Eyes Burn Gold” moves from jangly intrigue into anthemic rock heights. Showcasing vocalist Liam McLaughlin’s signature range, the track draws thematically from fantasy realms (and the sense of triumph achieved in fantasy video games) to create an affecting, dynamic rock sound — maneuvering from psychedelic entrancement to heavier rock emotion. Driven by ’60s-inspired percussion and a steady bass presence, the band explores a more atmospheric, emotive side of their alternative sound following their debut “Lady Danger.”
Lush jangling and soaring guitar work intertwine for a hazy, introspective opening, bolstered by a haunting vocal presence that seamlessly expands from raspy contemplations to rousing ardor. The “I place to rest” poetic lyricism invokes the fantasy realms the track was inspired by, dramatic and impactful as the eye-opening, cathartic sense lyrically exudes into an uptick of sturdy guitar distortion and multi-layered vocal passion. Burning imagery pairs with scorching guitars for wholly stirring chorus, traversing cohesively thereafter into wailing guitars with shades of Caspian’s post-punk and alt-rock synergy.
The “mind is broken” vocal fervency re-emerges just past the three-minute mark, the brooding vocal tone and fuzzy guitar work imparting a powerful pull into an expressive guitar solo finale. From the nocturnal, jangling subtlety of the opening sequence to the anthemically emotive build-ups throughout, “Eyes Burn Gold” is a stunningly theatrical rock success from Delta Fire.
