Laura Dern has joined the cast of The White Lotus season four, replacing Helena Bonham Carter.
Last week, it emerged that the British actress would be leaving the production, with an HBO statement revealing that it had “become apparent that the character which [series creator] Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”
“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks,” they continued. “HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”
Now, Deadline has reported that Oscar winner Laura Dern will be stepping in to replace her, taking on a newly written character that will be different to Bonham Carter’s but retain the same prominence within the storyline.
Dern and White have worked together on several projects before, including the 2007 film Year Of The Dog and the 2011 TV series Enlightened.
It will also not be the star’s first time on the show. Dern made an uncredited voice cameo in season two playing Abby, Dominic Dr Grasso’s (Michael Imperioli) estranged wife. This new character will reportedly be central to the main plot of the new season, which is set in France.
Finding fame in the ‘80s will films such as David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, Dern has appeared in blockbusters such as Jurassic Park and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as well as award-winning dramas such as The Master and Marriage Story, the latter of which won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Last month, The White Lotus season four rounded out its cast, with Kumail Nanjiani and New Girl star Max Greenfield joining the already announced Steve Coogan.
