Scotland’s premier songwriting talent, Dylan John Thomas, is making a triumphant return with his latest single, “Got You On My Mind,” out now via Believe Music. Building on his journey from grassroots DIY shows to headlining sold-out arenas, Thomas leans into an infectious, sunlit energy on this new track, blending vibrant banjo melodies with rousing brass arrangements. The result is a quintessential festival anthem, designed for communal singalongs and the kind of high-energy euphoria that defines his live shows.
The track marks a sonic evolution for the artist, who first began experimenting with the banjo while touring Scotland shortly after the release of his debut album. By weaving bluegrass-inspired fingerpicking into his signature retro-future songwriting style, Thomas creates a texture that feels both timeless and fresh. As Thomas notes, the instrument provided a much-needed pivot from his usual guitar-driven compositions:
“I got into banjo two years ago, just after the first album came out. We went on a wee trip round Scotland, and I took it with us. We were just kicking around, playing all the old folk songs. It gives a different type of sound to the guitar. It’s still sticking within that bluegrass feel, I suppose, with the rolling fingerpicking. But I wanted to see if we could fit it into the new tunes.”
To accompany the release, Thomas has shared a stunning live arrangement video, directed by Nicholas Afchain. Stripped back to its core, the performance highlights his formidable vocal ability, offering fans a more intimate look at the song’s construction and proving that behind the arena-sized anthems lies a songwriter with immense poise and technical depth.
