Formed based on their shared love of acts like Depeche Mode, The Cure and David Bowie, this alternative/electronic duo harnesses the spirit of their heroes quite wonderfully.
We love it when artists wear their influences on their sleeves. There’s nothing more tiresome and pretentious than someone pretending like they’ve invented or coined something that hasn’t existed in one form or another for decades. To that end, Pleasure and Pain feels like a loving tribute to a golden age of music. That era in the 80s where hairspray and lycra played second fiddle to power and conviction, and crafting something with substance took precedence over creating something that would be a “hit”.
Fortunately for the aforementioned acts, the work of that trailblazing trio did rather well (probably due to their inarguable excellence), and they had critical and commercial success as well as being embraced by the populace en masse.
If there’s any justice in the world, the same will ultimately be true for Eckotrigger. The London/Copenhagen-based group – made up of Joel Alexander (singer/ lyricist) and Paul Dogra (producer/instrumentalist) – are super stylish, full of charm and clearly incredibly committed.
This is not a pastiche. This is a love letter to a bygone era that shaped and influenced the musical taste and indeed, overall lifestyles of millions, dragged into the 21st Century with flashes of musical modernity more in line with acts like Hot Chip, Metronomy and Death Cab For Cutie.
The band have plans to perform in the UK and in Germany later this year. Based on the strength of this track and the live clips we’ve seen on their socials, you don’t want to miss it.
