Yaki Margulies is a musician, actor, writer, and comedian, originally from Seattle, WA. He has since migrated to sunnier climes and now lives in Los Angeles, California.
This sunny environment is evident in his newest single I Want To Love You But. A jaunty, jovial sound musically reminiscent of Surfer Blood, Weezer, Van Morrison and The Beach Boys, you’d be forgiven for thinking he didn’t have a care in the world. But delve a little deeper, and you’ll realise there’s a disparity between the feel of the lyrics and the music.
The lyrics are introspective and analytical, but also – in parts – pretty vicious. Yaki looks at his own flaws whilst also breaking down the shortcomings of his romantic interest. Of course, he’s been hurt, so there’s a level of understanding and empathy there. But also, how many times have you heard someone referred to as “an instrument of hurt”?! Damn Yaki!
In the same breath, the song’s coda, which centres around the refrain of “no, don’t let go / I’ve never been so scared of losing someone”, reveals just how much the object of his desire clearly means to him.
“We are complicated creatures with complex feelings, and this perfect pop-rock song conveys that exquisitely. Mission well and truly accomplished.”
The single is taken from Yaki’s sixth EP, the forthcoming “The Disappearing Man”, which drops on June 10th.
