Kallai – ‘Forever Could Never Be’

A blissfully layered darkgaze and shoegaze convergence appeals across Forever Could Never Be, a collaborative remix album from Portland, OR-based artist Kallai. Reimagining tracks from the album We Are Forever, the release integrates spacey synths, nocturnal guitars, and spectral vocals to expand eclectic shoegaze into industrial dance and lounge-pop realms.

The album opens gorgeously with “The Hymn / The Beautiful Ones (The Stargazer Lilies Remix),” with spacey synth chills and jangly nocturnal guitars complementing an intriguing spoken-word element, resembling a ghostly otherworldly frequency. The album’s ability to craft hypnotic, deeply atmospheric resonance is quickly on display. “Amor Occidit Omnia (Newphasemusic Remix)” ensues with a more distortion-friendly energy initially, venturing into delectably eerie interplay of twangy guitars and foreboding synths. Haunting vocals build from sparse backings into resonating expanses, indicative of the album’s tendency for gripping structural evolutions.

Another fantastic track, “The Wave (Ten Million Lights Remix)” embraces a submerged tonal feeling, venturing from subdued guitar fuzziness into a more blaring, warming pulsation and stutter-y, hypnotic vocal allure. Elsewhere, “Falling (Tears Run Rings Remix)” dazzles with a production reminiscent of Beach House’s glistening guitar tones, while the double-whammy of “As Night Falls” remixes close the album — excelling with both the extended Reclaim Remix and subdued, concise boredom & Romance remix send-off. Forever Could Never Be is a wonderfully melodic and meticulously layered full-length remix success from Kallai.

“The Wave (Ten Million Lights Remix)” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
