Emitting a magnetic rock sound inspired by Wilco and Tom Petty, “Who Cares” is an impactful new single from Pennsylvania-based artist Alex Stanilla. The track chronicles the first six months of his sobriety journey, transforming a doctor’s encouraging words into a cathartic anthem of acceptance and vulnerability.
Glistening keys and jangly guitars kick the track off with melodically approachable charm. Stanilla’s vocals emerge with equal doses of charisma and introspection, soaring in the “guess I noticed that they’re all coming true” perspectives of vulnerability. His vocals there remind fondly of James Dean Bradfield in their radiance and seamless ascent, escalating in the heartfelt “nobody cares about wherever you started or how he lost all of his friends.” The verses’ vaguer accounts move into greater clarity, with that title-bearing “who cares” hook arriving within an effervescent refrain — feeling cathartic as a reminder of that doctor’s encouraging words upon Stanilla’s discharge.
Gorgeous backing vocal harmonies infuse past the track’s midpoint, with the ensuing “condensation on a stained glass window, doesn’t look a thing like god” lyricism being artful in its clinging onto hope and guiding light, no matter how unique the circumstance. A lusher “who cares” refrain then closes out the track, questioning “does anybody?” before a final anthemic swell. “Who Cares” is a powerful, personal success from Alex Stanilla, incorporating hooky melodic vibrancy alongside poignant reflections on sobriety and the five stages of recovery.
