Mazmere’s guitar-driven EP David stands as a deeply moving tribute to those who have passed. Blending post-punk noise and shoegaze textures, the project of Jake Sinetos masterfully balances murky distortion with heavy emotional yearning to process grief, memory, and loss.
“I hadn’t planned for these songs to sit together, but looking at them now they seem to be connected by the same thing,” says Sinetos, a Peak District based artist and musician from San Francisco. “They’re all reaching towards people who aren’t here anymore, trying to make sense of what’s left behind.”
Opening the EP, its title track resonates with a crackling array of guitar distortion. The fuzzy, gauzy intensity develops across the first minute with warming intrigue, evolving thereafter into beautiful guitar twangs and a solemn, retrospective vocal feeling. “It’s been years now since I saw you, it’s been longer since I heard your voice,” Sinetos’ vocals resonate, as does a glistening guitar emphasis that unveils around 02:30. The mixture of murky distortion and glimmering twangs make for a delightful guitar-led mix throughout, while Sinetos’ vocals balance tonal nonchalance and heavy emotional weight, showing heartfelt yearning. The track features Amyas Varcoe on acoustic guitar and bass, and Ian Evans on electric guitar.
Arriving next, “I Can’t Hear You” also begins with a hazy collection of guitar tones — invoking a sort of shoegaze, textural immersion. Various vocal layers, ranging from a soothing murmuring to echoed spoken-word samples, make for an engrossing overall soundscape, as if shifting through radio stations while a simmering current of guitars mingle with sporadic rhythmic thumps. The EP also features “Run (Live)” — featuring the late Rob James on drums — and a Business 80 remix of “David.” H.A. Eugene of Business 80 produced its original version. David is a consuming success of an EP from Mazmere.
