polyμ – “pulse”

Japanese instrumental project polyμ returns with their stellar new single “pulse,” serving up a wonderful array of electronics and guitars. This is their first release in two years, featuring established veterans of the country’s indie and alternative scenes. The track beautifully merges the precise textures of electronica with the warm, driving energy of post-rock, blending spacey synths and late-night guitars.

The track’s production is gorgeously expansive, maneuvering from clanging, understated synths to effervescent infusions of shimmering fretwork. The initial electronic-forward arsenal embraces a bouncy, cosmic tonal disposition. A stabbing, bass-y prowess is met by vibrant, starry-eyed keyboard textures and consistent rhythms, which increase in vigor as the various melodic lines enter. Twangy illumination and tender jangles alike emanate from the string work, moving cohesively alongside the hypnotic interplay of synths and percussion.

A dreamy, introspective allure takes hold around the track’s midpoint, where a soaring, late-night guitar undercurrent finds support in heavier rhythms and sonar-like electronic frequencies. A triumphant final minute ensues, fully emphasizing crisp guitar brightness and sturdy rhythmic flows. Touches of synthesizer appear gorgeously as atmospheric accents, though largely it’s a guitar-fronted appeal that ends it all, seamlessly moving from the initial synth-led charm. Finding a balance between blissfully serene and infectiously energized, “pulse” is an immersive electronic success from polyμ.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
