The Avalanches have announced their fourth studio album, “No Bad Memories,” due out October 16. The Australian trio of Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and Andy Szekeres unveiled the project alongside a new single, “Can’t Get Over Losing You,” featuring Louisiana singer-songwriter and producer Portraits of Tracy.
The album purports to explore how advertising and consumer technology have woven themselves into personal memory, drawing on commercial jingles, tech start-up sounds and half-remembered audio logos from their childhood. “It’s been interesting as adults to reflect on this often stunning period of marketing – the creativity, filmmaking, photography and music – but which was also – you know, selling a completely unobtainable dream,” the band said in a statement. “Revisiting imagery and jingles from childhood and realizing how profoundly they have stuck…Taking these sound sources from within the heart of this kinda corporate framework and flipping the fragments into our own kind of joyous pop music eventually we arrived at this world of No Bad Memories.”
“Can’t Get Over Losing You” pairs driving, garage-rock drums with the group’s trademark blend of nostalgic sampling and melodious harmonies. The Avalanches wrote the song in 2024 with Portraits of Tracy. “Tracy is a hilarious, brave and tender human being who we have become very close to over the years we’ve been making music together,” the band added. “Tracy’s production and mixing is insane but it’s her voice and songwriting that break our heart time after time, truly a generational talent! We feel very fortunate to make music together.”
The single follows three earlier No Bad Memories tracks: “Blue Shadows” with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, “Every Single Weekend” with Jamie xx, and “Together” with Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss. As with the band’s previous two albums, Wildflowers and We Will Always Love You, the new record features many outside collaborators.
Since breaking through with their landmark 2000 debut Since I Left You, The Avalanches have built a dedicated fan base and amassed more than a million album sales and 700 million streams. In 2024, they appeared on Jamie xx’s In Waves on the track “All You Children.” The band has a busy run of live dates ahead, including their first-ever show in Mexico, a stop at New York’s Terminal 5 in October, and a headline show at London’s Roundhouse in November as part of Pitchfork Music Festival, alongside several other DJ sets around the world.
