Jawdropped Release Driving New Single ‘Cup’ Ahead of Debut Album Secret To Spare

Los Angeles indie outfit Jawdropped have unveiled their driving new single, “Cup”, the latest preview of their anticipated debut album, Secret To Spare, arriving September 18th via Transgressive Records / Canvasback.

Blending ’90s alternative radio crunch with big-hearted indie rock and ragged alt-country, Secret To Spare captures the dual nature of Los Angeles—balancing sunny ambitions against underlying burnout. “Cup” expands on character-driven themes first explored in the band’s earlier work, following a starry-eyed transplant confronting the reality of life in the city.

Lyrically, the album pulls from what co-lyricists Roman Zangari and Kyra Morling describe as “stories overheard as a barfly,” examining the thin line between creative aspiration and disillusionment.

Sharing the inspiration behind “Cup,” the band explained:

“The idea for ‘Cup’ actually came from an older song of ours called ‘Star.’ We wanted to write about this same character who moves to LA with stars in their eyes, only to see themselves burnout. It’s about getting swept up in the ‘idea’ of a place, rather than the reality. Realising you’re the last one at the party.”

Expanding on the album’s thematic foundation, Roman Zangari and Kyra Morling reflected on their perspective as LA artists:

“L.A. is this destination that so many people move to with a dream of having this exciting life in the arts. There’s so many crazy people you meet across that spectrum of failure and success, and I’m really fascinated by those stories. But there’s a self-reflective level too, because we’re also playing that game. We’re no different than the failed actor that’s working at the bar.”

“I’m always writing based off of things that I hear, or something that happened to a friend.”

In support of the record, Jawdropped are currently on a US tour that includes dates supporting This Is Lorelei. The four-piece will head across the Atlantic in October and November for a string of UK and European headline shows, alongside an appearance as part of Pitchfork Music Festival London.
