Berklee-trained multi-instrumentalist Joe Sparks brings a self-produced musical approach to upcoming album Regina In Her Purple Coveralls Inside The Circle, performing every instrument and sound across the 12-track album. Its October 30th release follows a sequence of singles that moves between groove-oriented experimentation, alternative rock, and pop-minded songwriting.
Amongst the album’s many standout tracks, “Pure Blue Gertrude” is exemplary of Sparks’ immersive songwriting, here stirring across a variety of twangy throwback guitars, mellow keys, and harmonious melodic hooks. “Gertrude, were you shocked to learn who was your friend, and who pretended?” his delivery inquires amidst bouncy synths and increasing fervency, delighting in lyricism that captures navigating through relationships — finding friend, foe, and those seemingly indifferent. Twanging guitars carry an especially resonant outro, before culminating in a final dose of warming keys. From the initial psych-pop demeanor to more expressive rock complements, “Pure Blue Gertrude” showcases Sparks’ riveting, melodic songwriting in strong form.
The rest of the album continues to enamor in its magnetic productions, balancing melodic approachability and thematic emotional weight. Focus track “Regina” stirs in dual-layered phrasing, emitting an album-touting refrain that conveys an enjoyably loose art-rock form. Added distorted guitars lend a heightened rock character as depictions of the titular Regina continue, then arriving into a charismatic guitar solo with scorching appeal. Opening track “One With Everything” excels as well, with the lead presence yearning to “be one with everything” as funky bass and debonair tonal mixes make for an eclectic production, while fellow single “Miss Ya Miss Alyssa” fuses pulsing synth effervescence with bass-y warmth, before a perky soulfulness melds with free-flowing guitar entrancement. Full of fantastic songwriting, Regina In Her Purple Coveralls Inside The Circle looks to be an excellent full-length output from Joe Sparks.
