NEEDTOBREATHE will release The Long Surrender and The Fellow Passengers of Pain, an expanded edition of the band’s The Long Surrender, on November 19 via MCA. The deluxe album adds six new songs and collaborations to the original project, which centers on themes of surrender, change and renewal.
The announcement arrives with the first new track, “Can’t Apologize,” featuring singer-songwriter Jonah Kagen. NEEDTOBREATHE’s Josh Lovelace said the band had accumulated additional material during the current album cycle and wanted to share some of those songs as part of the expanded release. “We’re in a time of overflow in the band and there are some new songs that we are really proud of that we wanted to put out during this season of The Long Surrender,” he said. “‘Can’t Apologize’ is one of those songs, and we’re really excited to have our friend Jonah Kagen feature on it. It’s just the band in a room playing together, trying to be present and inspired. We hope you take a listen.”
Kagen, who described himself as a longtime fan of the group, said the collaboration gave him the chance to contribute to a musical world he had followed for years. “As a longtime fan of NTB and the world they’ve built around their music, this was such an amazing experience for me. I’m honored to be a part of this song and can’t wait for everyone to hear it,” he said.
The Long Surrender was produced by nine-time Grammy Award winner Dave Cobb, whose credits include Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson. Its expanded edition brings additional voices into the project through features from Kagen, Evan Honer, Ann Wilson, Bre Kennedy and others.
