Minneapolis singer-songwriter Joe Kelly captures the hazy intimacy of an uncertain romance on “The Only Thing,” his first single from a forthcoming debut album. Shaped by more than a decade of performing and a live approach centered on layered guitar and vocals, the track pairs easygoing acoustic pop with reflective songwriting.
Kelly explains: “I chose this song as the first single because it perfectly captures my entire vibe: a fun groove mixed with a little bit of reflection, a dash of nostalgia, and heaps of hopeless romanticism.”
A lushly melodic presence is conveyed right away, with mellow acoustic guitar and bouncy rhythms joined by Kelly’s smooth delivery. “You’re the only one I talked to, in a long time, so I’ve been tripping over my words,” he admits, complemented by chilled-out keys as lyricism continues to embrace the vulnerable and relatable. The “inside your bedroom” setting shifts from mere acquaintances to a budding relationship, aptly paired by smitten sentiments and backing harmonic flourishes.
“I could fall asleep like this, feeling you breathe,” Kelly’s lead resonates in that magnetic chorus. “And when I open my eyes, you’re the only thing that I can see.” The phrasing depicts a blissful state of new love and beginnings, reaching a point where both can mutually reminisce on past relationships. “Suddenly sunlight hits your bedroom,” the performance then pushes forth, where reminders of the daily grind’s impending presence begin to burst that idyllic bedroom-set bubble. A spacious tonal presence also stirs around the three-minute turn, where more subdued guitar sounds build alongside ethereal backing harmonies into a final “could fall asleep” hooky emotion. “The Only Thing” is a heartfelt, acoustic-driven pop success from Joe Kelly.
