Born in Cornwall but sharpened in Kent, Lives have definitely made their presence felt over the last couple of years within the UK’s independent scene and beyond, thanks to their distinctive blend of post-punk and hard rock. Beyond the undeniable appeal of their music, they’re also a band that doesn’t shy away from speaking out when they need to, often exploring political and social themes through their music.
Following the success of their album Let Them Eat Cake, Lives are returning with what they have called their darkest work to date in the form of Burn, a gritty track addressing the disturbing nature of international arms dealers and the arms trade. Once again, the band shows their teeth and holds nothing back when it comes to delivering their sharp songwriting and confronting difficult subjects.
For those who were expecting the quintessential hard-hitting riffs and relentlessly piercing drums of Lives, there’s no reason to worry, as their characteristic intensity is still very much present. If anything, the sombre and raging nature of Burn’s subject matter only adds more fuel to the fire, creating a track that feels every bit as forceful as its message. With a larger-than-life chorus repeating the title of the track, the headbanging riffage is darkly complemented by grim lyrics such as, “people are tired of fighting, people are tired of dying.”
