Some bands have manifestos. GLIZZ have bad ideas, questionable appetites and apparently just enough available credit to keep recording them.

The Portland duo of drummer Aris Hunter-Wales—of Bewitcher, Soulgrinder and Order of the Gash—and guitarist/bassist/vocalist J. Bennett of Ides of Gemini and Black Mare made their first greasy impression earlier this year with debut EP Grenades. Now, barely seven months later, they’re back with another four-song dose of rock ’n’ roll degeneracy titled, appropriately enough, Fat Lips.

“Think of all the reasons you might have fat lips,” Bennett says. “Maybe you got punched in the mouth. Maybe you’ve got Botox. Maybe you talk too much. Maybe you’re Mick Jagger. They all apply here.”

Recorded in Portland with Matt Taylor of Dry Socket and Hybrid Forms, who also engineered Grenades, Fat Lips finds GLIZZ bringing a few friends along for the damage. Taylor contributes backing vocals to “Kiss It Goodbye” and additional guitar to “Just What I Needed,” while jazz vocalist Jenny Luna joins him on backing vocals for both tracks. Shadowland vocalist Tanya Finder lends her voice to “This Is Getting Old and So Are You.” Sanford Parker, who handled Grenades, once again mixes and masters.

And yes, “Just What I Needed” is exactly what you think it is. GLIZZ close the EP by putting their hands on the Cars classic, because apparently four decades of evidence that Ric Ocasek knew what he was doing wasn’t enough to keep these two away from it.

Hunter-Wales offers perhaps the most useful explanation of what’s going on here:

“Fat Lips is further proof that GLIZZ isn’t a band. It’s a libido with a credit card that’s maxed out. And a hangover. Plus, we do a Cars song!”

Hard to improve on that.
