Billy Stuart – ‘Sink With Me’ EP

Billy Stuart‘s excellent Sink With Me is a debut solo EP that finds the Sacramento-based guitarist moving from years in Northern California’s hardcore punk and doom metal scenes toward a more intimate acoustic approach. Recorded at Uprise Recording between January and March 2026, the five-song release retains some of the intensity of Stuart’s heavier background while building its arrangements around acoustic and clean electric guitar, piano, bass, drums, and strings.

Opening the EP, “Downtrend” consumes in its steady, shimmering acoustic strums melding with heart-on-sleeve lyrical introspection. Laments on “this joy that has been ripped away” and an all-consuming void, chipping away at one’s sanity, drive into an emotively impactful account of “spiraling down.” Glistening electric guitar adds well to the aspirations to “salvage all of the dreams that have broke,” impactfully capturing the process of recovery following personal tumult. Themes of loss, memory, and moving forward are particularly resonant here.

Ensuing track “The Open Door” compels in its perspectives of uncertainty and limitations. “I’m shaking with this new fear of the unknown world in front of me,” Stuart conveys, with serene touches of piano adding to the calming acoustic guitar and consistent percussion. References to “breathing a foreign air” and a “new beginning” frame an uncertain unfamiliarity while aspiring toward a fresh chapter. The track is further exemplary of Stuart’s riveting, emotionally poetic songwriting.

The EP’s finale, “Sink With Me,” is especially touching in its depictions of self-destruction, which can push loved ones away. “Just promise that you’ll run away from me before I fall / As it all starts to break,” Stuart delivers alongside trickling acoustics, somber in its “I’m empty and devoid” admissions as a beloved enters a new life with a new lover. The descriptions of walking “fragile ground” and pushing others away, even despite a love for them, are stirring. A soaring electric guitar solo bolsters the consuming sound even further. Sink With Me is an affecting folk success from Billy Stuart.
