Tarita – “The Death of Peter Pan”

Chennai-based composer Tarita revisits the imaginative wonder of childhood on “The Death of Peter Pan,” a folk-pop offering written nearly two decades ago and now brought to life with renewed production. Gentle acoustic guitar, tender backing harmonies, and warm instrumental flourishes frame a bittersweet reflection on growing up and leaving youthful fantasies behind.

The track develops beautifully with a mixture of serene acoustic guitar layers and Tarita’s serene lead introspection. Her initial lyricism plays like a recollection of childhood and the wondrous imagination that accompanies it. “I rode a dragon with silver scales, above pirate ships with crisp white sails,” she lets out, its envisioning of mythical creatures and scenic locales building into a stirring hook, with added harmonic layering and gentle piano adornments. “What ever happened to Peter Pan? Woke up a man,” the delivery emanates there.

Vibrant guitar trickles and heartrending textures punctuate that chorus, while the verses return thereafter with piano-touched accounts of swimming with mermaids, playing as a white knight, and other fantasy-centric adventures. “By day I ran free, with the unicorn,” her lead presence continues to embrace the freedom and creativity of younger days, while also remarking on the demise of that childhood. Warming brass elements join subsequently, as the dual-lead lines continue to captivate in their dreamy, melodic entrancement. “The Death of Peter Pan” is a moving folk success from Tarita.
