Lukas Dean is a queer and trans artist from Oslo, Norway, with a story to tell. A contestant on The Voice Norway in 2025, he shares his trans story in vivid detail on “Baby Girl,” walking through his coming out process with real vulnerability. The song opens with just vocals and acoustic guitar, and it feels so tender that he seems to be in the room with you as you go through your own journey. He sings, “I thought it would change overnight, as if cutting my hair might undo my entire life.” From there he dives into how slow transition can feel, because even as we long to change faster and become more ourselves, change moves at the pace of life and asks us to be patient. That waiting can be incredibly hard, since it can intensify gender dysphoria, the discomfort and dissonance many trans people feel towards their body. His honesty is relatable to trans people across the world, which makes the song resonate deeply.
Bass and drums join as the song moves into the chorus, which turns to a relationship with someone who does not accept him for who he is. He sings, “I’ll be your babygirl…I’ll try to lie.” The chorus sounds happy and chipper, yet the lyrics are sad, because he feels he must conform and hide to be loved by the people he loves. That sadness comes through in the second to last chorus, when the drums cut out and the song settles into the somberness of the words. “I’ll be your babygirl, but I don’t want to have to hide” and “Can’t be your baby girl because I don’t want to lie.” Then he finds his power and realizes that no relationship or friendship is worth hiding who he is. He needs to be himself to be free, and he deserves happiness, which gives the song an empowering finish.

“Baby Girl” is one of the first songs I ever started writing, but it took me a long time to finish. I originally wrote it when I was coming to terms with being trans, and it was written from a place of fear and insecurity. I was afraid I would lose the people that I loved if I came out, and that feeling became the foundation for the song.I put the song aside for some years, and when I started working on it again, I had a completely different relationship with my identity. At that point, I was confident and proud of being trans, and I wanted the song to reflect this change of perspective. It gradually turned into a song about self-acceptance, trans pride, and finding the courage to be yourself. The process of recording the song was a very unique experience. It was strange to look back on how I felt when I was first coming out, and reflect on the growth and change of perspective I’ve had since then. – Lukas Dean
