GOT7's leader JAY B has released his new single album “Chptr. 1,” featuring the songs 'Sweetie,' and 'Honeydew,' along with a music video.
"Chptr. 1" marks the first in a series of singles JAY B is planning on releasing, each with a different vibe and feeling, showing freer and more diverse sides of himself.
In JAY B's Melon Artist Note he says;
Hello, this is JAY B! The single 'Chptr. 1' has been released, featuring a charm distinct from my full-length albums or EPs. It is the first installment of an upcoming single series. I plan to show you more free and diverse sides of myself in the future, so please look forward to it!
He has stated that this chapter is him showing he is a “Dance-singer" and dance and sing he does. 'Honeydew' opens with a whistle then JAY B confidently saying, “look.” The music picks up and dances through a hallway in the video, switching between looks, with prominent shots of his arms. There’s closeup shots of his face, showing off his odd-eye lenses which have been a staple of his looks since GOT7.
Halfway through the song (at the 1:27 mark actually), he has another outfit change, a shirt that accentuates his shoulders and a cowboy hat. He is joined by dancers, going full out on sharp choreography, using the cowboy hat as a centerpiece at points. He very much is a dance-singer. JAY B actually started as a b-boy, and then also became a singer. And he excels in both.
There’s a point in the video where the cowboy hat version grabs the sparkly shirt version of himself and the dancers surround them both. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but it’s provocative.
JAY B has said he switched up the way he sounds in this Chptr, since it’s a departure from his usual R&B focused tracks, and it’s a clear difference from TR.EE, which released earlier this year. It is much more dance focused and uptempo. His voice is also much fuller and he’s not singing as high as he does on his other tracks.
Usually when he sings, he sounds like he’s yearning and teasing. But here, he sounds more cheeky and confident. When he performs, he’s usually a mix of all of these, but he has definitely added a depth to his voice for Honeydew. His voice has matured throughout his entire career, and he’s clearly continuously working to evolve it.
The second song on "Chptr. 1," 'Sweetie,' he had been performing on tour, but now fans are hearing the studio version for the first time. His background vocals and adlibs are much clearer here, and that adds an extra layer to it. There’s even a part where he says, “groove on me babe,” and you can hear him growl on the “gr.” There’s also vocal effects that are much clearer on the studio version. When the music drops out at the end, he finishes the song with, “I can’t help, but I sing for you,” which is a message for his fans. He knows he can’t always help his fans directly, but he hopes his songs can help them through anything they need.
His yearning voice is more prominent here than on Honeydew, but his voice still sounds fuller and with a lot more depth than the songs on TR.EE, which makes sense as JAY B has said these songs are much more evening songs, rather than chill late night.
The two songs on Chptr 1. are a fantastic introduction to the new chapters and singles JAY B is planning on releasing. The concept is clear, the video is gorgeous, the choreography is fun and precise, and he sounds phenomenal. I give it a 7/7. Obviously out of 7. He’s in GOT7.
This has been a busy year for GOT7’s leader. In April, he officially announced his own company, 528Hz. A few weeks later, he announced his third mini album, TR.EE, with 6 tracks fully written by him, with the title track Layback.
He also announced his tape: roots Asia tour, first in Seoul and Bangkok, then continuing in Taipei, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. He then announced the USA leg of the tour, starting in Los Angeles, then going to San Francisco, Tacoma, New York, Dallas, and finally closing out in Chicago.
Right after announcing the USA tour, he also announced his first LP as Def., his producer persona. JAY B has stated that Def. is for more personal music that goes deeper into his feelings, and JAY B is the all around artist. The LP released in the middle of his USA tour, along with the music video for BoY.
He told fans in Los Angeles he’d be releasing the single album at the end of October, saying “Sweetie” would be joined by another song, but would not spoil anything else. He did say he had already filmed the music video before coming to the U.S. to tour, and said he looked, “fucking cool.” He did, by the way.
