I wanted you to notice
I have you on a string
But if I twist a finger
That finger starts to bleed
There is a cruel irony in trying to hold another person emotionally captive, particularly when the ropes that bind them eventually tighten around your own wrists. Relationships of a toxic nature have a way of becoming elaborate systems of mutual confinement, with both parties convinced they possess the keys, even as the walls slowly close around them.
Los Angeles musician Julian Ash explores that treacherous human appetite for control on Handcuffed to the Steering Wheel, the latest single from his Omnihell project.
The song was written and produced by Ash, with drums by Blake Dimas and mastering by Auragraph. Its jangling guitars and jaunty backbeat establish an unexpectedly buoyant atmosphere, lending the music an almost carefree disposition that sits curiously against its troubled subject matter. The guitars tumble through the arrangement with a delicate, chiming quality, while Dimas maintains a brisk, unhurried rhythm that gives the composition a pleasing sense of forward motion. Beneath this apparent lightness resides a considerably more complicated emotional landscape.
Ash’s vocals are particularly beautiful, delivered with a forlorn tenderness that seems to occupy some distant space between memory and apparition. Generous layers of echo surround his voice, lending each phrase a spectral quality, as though a departed spirit has briefly returned to impart the wisdom acquired through a lifetime of unfortunate decisions. His delivery carries the weary affection of someone who has already experienced the consequences of his mistakes and would dearly prefer that somebody else be spared the same education.
The lyrics examine the uncomfortable relationship between manipulation and vulnerability, beginning with the desire to control another person before gradually revealing the damage such control inflicts upon its wielder. Here is someone ostensibly responsible for determining his own direction, yet physically incapable of abandoning the machinery carrying him forward. The simplicity of the phrases gives them a disturbing authority, particularly when heard against music whose gentle momentum seems almost oblivious to the predicament being described.
Brief but affecting, Handcuffed to the Steering Wheel leaves an impression of emotional exhaustion tempered by considerable compassion. Its modest arrangement, luminous guitar work, and beautifully distant vocals suggest a conversation with the past, conducted in the faint hope that experience might eventually lead to better judgment.

Omnihell will perform live on January 22 at El Cid in Los Angeles, presented by Minty Boi, coinciding with the release of the short EP Bloodwork. Ash plans to perform with a full live band, allowing the songs to develop organically onstage and giving their more fragile emotional qualities room to breathe.
