Yulyseus – ‘Nothing Under Heaven’

Nothing Under Heaven is a grippingly luminous ambient album from Scottish multi-instrumentalist Yulyseus, released today. Shifting from patient beginnings into swelling synth grandiosity and bowed strings, the album’s captivating productions navigate movement and stillness to create an artfully layered, atmospheric listening experience.

Opening the album, “Veillands” unfolds with a gorgeously shimmering quality. The ambient warmness sits somewhere between spacious intrigue and swelling orchestral power, expanding to a sense of compelling grandiosity as the sweepingly memorable synths conjure a commanding hold, melodically. Its final 30 seconds strut a lusher introspection, leading to the more elegant initial push of “Eolasfalas.” That track excels in its initial blissfulness, with more intense deeper-toned ruminations emerging after the first minute; these first two tracks deliver a stellar opening punch, showcasing the artist’s tendency to seamlessly grow from subdued beginnings into moving, emotive ambient layers.

The album’s title track is another gem. An effervescent, glistening element lingers alongside an airy backing resonance, resembling trickling aquatic effects in its caressing flow. Its middle section showcases an alluring pulsing, bolstering charm, before falling back into the serene initial tonal presentation. “Caoimal” also stands out with its lofty, cinematic-feeling weight, utilizing orchestral likenesses in its all-enveloping construction. Nothing Under Heaven is an immersive, meticulously layered ambient success from Yulyseus.
