Mary Knoblock – ‘Peach’

Enamoring with both classical and dream-pop elements, Peach is an intimate new album from Portland, OR-based singer-songwriter Mary Knoblock, out today. Blending neo-classical piano, cinematic strings, and folk-Americana atmospheres, the record functions as a warm, vulnerable diary exploring self-discovery and raw emotional honesty. Knoblock’s riveting songwriting has caught our ears in the past with multiple releases, from the haunting dream-pop sound throughout album Halo and the alluring track “Excuse Me While I Go Fall in Love.”

A lovely, serene piano trickling opens the album as “Mustang Clover” gets underway. Heartfelt strings enter seamlessly, combining with the twinkling keys and Knoblock’s caressingly introspective vocals for a moving, rainy-day pop sound. “Metal Neon Sky” ensues with some neo-classical flair in the piano work, which retains a lush initial tonal quality that ascends into flurries of more expressive emotion. A lyrical mystique, referencing a carousel and Ferris wheel, craft a soundscape fit for late-night carnival entrancement. “I held my breath at the sights,” Knoblock’s consuming vocals let out, into a title-touting remarking and “sitting there and waiting” contemplation allure. “Metal Neon Sky” is a fantastic display of atmospheric, classical-touched art-pop songwriting.

Next arrives the album’s title track, which resembles the dream-pop pursuits within Halo. Knoblock’s calming vocals move alongside a minimalist array of subdued, submerged strings and slow-burning percussion. The album excels in both more minimalist works like “Peach” and bustling expressions like “Metal Neon Sky” and “I Knew You,” the latter of which conjures a darkly captivating avant-garde quality in its twangy guitars, rhythmic pitter-pattering, and chilly strings. Peach presents another exceptional display of songwriting and atmospheric productions from Mary Knoblock.

“Peach” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
