Ahead of their tour commencing this July, delve into what to expect with a review of Sisters’ recently released hypnotic single: Creatures.
It’s approximately 3,600 miles from Michigan to Liverpool, with similarities between the two being scarce.
However, both do boast a world-renowned music scene, and it’s this common factor that helped give rise to the ever-developing dream-rock band, Sisters.
When lead singer, Gigi, alongside drummer, James, chose to take what they had learned from their Michigan folk music studies and pursue a bolder, heavier area of instrumentation, it was Liverpool that they settled on. And so, the 3,600-mile gap was bridged. Once they commenced their studies in the maritime city, the pair, by happy coincidence, met the band’s bassist, synth player and guitarist: Odelia, Mira and Lewis respectively.
Soon after bursting onto the city’s music scene, the band’s distinctive ‘weepy-grunge’ style caught the ear of prominent promoters, with their music championed by the likes of BBC radio and Rough Trade. Most recently, John Kennedy of Radio X hand-picked the single, Creatures, for a spin on his ‘X-posure’ hour. And what a single it is. Laced with references to understanding of self, the introspective lyrics claw at the listener, confidently carried by Gigi’s melodic drawl. The singer spoke candidly about the 2025 release, explaining its role as a musical response to her younger years, and the emotions that now surround the memory of them. She is frank in her approach to discussing the transition from childhood home to adult individuality noting:
Her voice cuts through that “stale air”, with the word ‘maybe’ often cropping up in the song. It’s epitomic of lingering adolescence, a prefix to soften harsher statements about identity that become all too familiar in young adulthood. The song also lurches from the tangible to something otherworldly. Whilst rooted in the singer’s observation of a reality that she felt was beginning to stagnate, the imagery provided is fresh and dynamic. The title, Creatures, invites a myriad of ideas and the gnarly vocabulary: ‘disfigured’ and ‘lives in you deeper’ is almost fairytale-like. The band skilfully weave dreams with reality, to birth a contradictory single. It’s melancholy. It’s angry. And it wouldn’t be such without the equal success of instrumentation as well as the lyrics.
Gigi’s voice is deep and throaty, smoothly scratching the accompanying guitars. Her Brooklyn accent punctuates certain words, complementing the accompanying growl of guitars that follow her lead until clear, confident breaks of urgency. Percussion is bold and driving, working well alongside bass to create an underlying headiness. For fans of Cardinals and 90s female grunge greats, Sisters are making their versatility clear, with a distinct sound that draws on so many genres. They have convincingly married rock to a more ethereal style and have crafted something reminiscent of Mazzy Star meeting Hole; but also, something entirely new and entirely their own.
Their debut EP, Bite, was released in November 2025 and is a continued explosion of everything that is so good about the single, Creatures. With a visualiser for the song being recently released, anticipation for their upcoming tour couldn’t be greater. Catch Sisters on their UK tour from July 28 to August 8; small venues, local support acts and your new favourite band, what’s not to love?
