Ferndale, Washington-based duo Until They Burn Me pair impactful garage-rock vigor with deeply personal reflections on addiction in new single “Addict.” Formed by Cody Carlyle and Travis Jordan, the duo draws from more than 35 years of shared musical history, delivering a nostalgic late-’80s/early-’90s rock sound with visceral emotional weight, alongside past experiences of addiction and homelessness.

A raucous, invigorating sound compels immediately, melding snarling guitar distortion and visceral vocal work. Accounts of addiction and its crutches emerge in the opening “I’m addicted to it, but I can’t stand it” declaration, with continued descriptions like “I need a taste” capturing a daring way of living: “Flying on autopilot, in the ejection seat.” The chugging rhythm section and fierce alt-rock guitars combine with these perspectives of personal tumult and attachment, especially memorable in the “am I a psychopath?” segment—where one’s cognition deteriorates and anxiety takes over.

The instrumentation is jam-packed with ardor as well, particularly in the segments where the lead singing takes a reprieve. The cry of “oh my god, it’s calling…” launches into a blistering frenzy of roaring, no-frills guitar work and punctuating bass maneuvers. Equal parts throwback rock vigor and modern cutting-edge fervency, Until They Burn Me’s “Addict” frames the plight of past addiction within a delectably gritty, from-the-heart production.
