Superanimals are quite a rarity in their own right. Not only do they stand out visually, with each member embodying a character represented by an animal mask, but their origins are just as fascinating. Based in Barcelona, the six-piece is made up of five Argentinian musicians and one Catalan member. Their sound follows the same eclectic spirit, bringing together alternative rock, funk, pop, dance, and reggae into what the band describes as “power rock animal.”
However, the appeal of Superanimals goes far beyond their eccentric appearance and varied sound. There is an entire lore surrounding the band, as these six characters come from the planet Zypria-7, a world where frequencies possess the power to alter reality. While their true identities remain a well-kept secret, they are known as Mark Animal (lead vocals), Pantro (guitar), Miss Ripley (bass/backing vocals), John Crow (guitar), Fox Beat (drums/sequences), and Mac Leod (performance/percussion/backing vocals).
That raw musicality comes to the forefront on Sugar Dandy, a song that showcases Superanimals’ versatility while delivering plenty of sharp songwriting. At its core, the track introduces a character we have probably all encountered at some point: the stereotypical delusional individual who believes he can seduce anyone, places himself on a pedestal, and remains completely oblivious to how socially awkward and annoying he can be. Rather than taking responsibility for his own mishaps, he constantly blames everyone else, turning him into the kind of strange specimen who seems to prey on others and appears precisely when he is least wanted.
Musically, Sugar Dandy is a catchy delight driven by playful vocals, hypnotic guitar passages, and chaotic instrumentation that sits somewhere between funk and alternative rock. The track constantly keeps things moving, throwing different elements into the mix while maintaining its infectious energy.
One of the most memorable moments arrives when bassist Miss Ripley takes center stage for a vocal section of her own. Told from her perspective, the passage directly criticizes the “Sugar Dandy” and highlights just how undesirable his presence is from a woman’s point of view.
After all the chaotic musicality, Sugar Dandy takes an unexpected turn towards a chilled reggae-infused section. Rather than feeling out of place, this change works surprisingly well, integrating seamlessly into the track and providing a satisfying conclusion.
