Matty Fenris’ “Cazadora” is a self-produced single that finds the York, England singer-songwriter taking full control of its writing, performance, and production. Drawing from his background in the outlaw country tradition and a body of songwriting shaped by personal adversity, Fenris uses the track to further establish his affinity for character-driven storytelling and songs centered on transformation.

The narratively striking, musically stylish production delights in its traversing entrancement. “In an off-track deadwood town, the reluctant dishonored guest, of the Reverend Devlin Brown,” Fenris’ delivery is captivating alongside bouncy bass and steady acoustic strums. The “shadowed ground” expanse is fantastic in its rock-minded infusion, imparting doses of guitar distortion and multi-layered harmonies. “Don’t you know I’m a changed man?” his line questions at its conclusion, marking a thoroughly replay-inducing segment.

“And the night is paper thin, but it’s only getting broader,” the stirring lyricism continues, striving to make it to dawn and, ultimately, the border. The light brass-touched chilliness bolsters the atmospheric production, shifting seamlessly between artful verses and more expressive melodic hooks in the “oh Cazadora, the hounds are on my trail…” sequence, evoking shades of Bowie throughout. “Cazadora” is a wholly consuming success of a track from Matty Fenris, capable of both stunningly narrative-rich lyricism and stylish musicality.
