KaiserKillers’ stellar new single “Isolation” emerged from an early songwriting collaboration between Johnny Zero and Andy deForest, with the two approaching the song’s central idea from notably different perspectives. Rather than the band’s typically layered approach, the track was built around a simple two-chord progression and a straightforward riff, giving its exploration of solitude a more direct foundation.

A throwback rock charm emanates right away, as jangly guitars enter alongside a fervent lead presence. “Don’t know where we’re coming from, and don’t know where we’re going to,” Johnny Zero’s memorable delivery exudes, capable of both debonair build-ups and pitch-fluctuating prowess, evident in the title-bearing chorus, which lends a fond likeness to The Housemartins in its playfully harmonious rock sound. Blares of thunderous guitars meld with the consistent mix, for an overall climactic allure.

The drawn-out phrasing of the word “isolation” is an especially memorable moment, complemented by a variety of pleasing sounds, from a bouncy bassline to the smooth jangling and sporadic blares of guitar. The cumulative result is an excellent rocker, excelling in its infusion of power-pop, alternative, and punk. “Isolation” is a replay-inducing success that has us anticipating whatever’s next from KaiserKillers, which alongside Johnny Zero also comprises guitarist Cristi Mac Seáin, guitarist Andy deForest, and drummer Stix McIntosh.
