Stephen Graham has joined the cast for Heat 2, the long awaited sequel to Michael Mann’s heist classic.
Released in 1995, Heat starred Al Pacino as a detective in pursuit of a master thief (Robert De Niro), with both men’s devotion to their worlds mirroring each other. It is considered one of the great movies of the ‘90s.
A follow-up to the fan-favourite has been in the works for a number of years, with Mann planning to adapt his 2022 sequel novel, which takes place both before and after the events of the first film, for the big screen.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Driver have been attached to the project for some time and earlier this year Christian Bale joined the cast.
While roles haven’t been confirmed, Graham is rumoured to be playing a younger version of Neil McCauley, famously portrayed by De Niro in the 1995 movie, according to Variety.
Bale is reportedly lined up for the role of LAPD detective Vincent Hanna, played by Pacino, and DiCaprio is expected to play Val Kilmer’s character and McCauley’s right-hand man, Chris Shiherlis.
The role comes Graham’s success with the Netflix hit Adolescence and the Disney+ series A Thousand Blows. He is currently in Venice for the premiere of Florian Zeller’s Bunker, in which he stars alongside Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, and will soon be seen in the Apple TV+ series Nocturne, from October 30.
Little has been officially confirmed about Heat 2, although Mann shared a shooting update last September. “I look forward to possibly shooting it in 2026,” he told Variety at the time. “We’re in the middle of doing all the things – budgeting, scheduling, casting process.”
The original movie inspired a generation of filmmakers that came after, with Christopher Nolan citing it as an inspiration for his blockbuster The Dark Knight. The Grand Theft Auto video game series also made references to the film.
